Project Overview
The Greek Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Climate Change needed expert support to evaluate the implementation of the Special Framework for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development for Tourism. With tourism being a vital sector for Greece, the Ministry aimed to ensure sustainable growth while balancing environmental and developmental priorities. Additionally, a revision of the existing Common Ministerial Decision, alongside the preparation of a comprehensive Environmental Strategic Impact Study, was required.
The approach
Our consulting team stepped in to provide specialized guidance to the Planning Directorate of the Ministry. Our approach was multi-faceted, focusing on detailed assessments, strategic meetings, and comprehensive documentation.
We conducted an in-depth analysis of the current Special Framework for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development for Tourism, assessing its implementation against national goals for sustainable growth. Our evaluation highlighted strengths, gaps, and areas for potential improvement to align with the evolving needs of the tourism sector.
We facilitated meetings between the Planning Directorate and relevant agencies, offering support in navigating complex inter-agency communications. By guiding these discussions, we helped shape the collaboration required for the formulation of revised policies
Our team contributed to the formulation of a draft revision of the Common Ministerial Decision, ensuring that it adhered to sustainable development objectives. This draft laid the foundation for future policy improvements, incorporating both environmental considerations and developmental needs.
To support the Ministry's long-term goals, we prepared an Environmental Strategic Impact Study (ESIS). This detailed report assessed the potential environmental impacts of proposed tourism-related developments and offered mitigation strategies to ensure sustainable outcomes.
Through our targeted support, the Ministry was able to draft an improved policy framework for spatial planning in tourism. Our evaluation report became a cornerstone for future planning, helping the Ministry create a more sustainable roadmap for the sector
