IPTOMETRICS: Real-Time Energy Monitoring

IPTOMETRICS is a web-based platform developed for IPTO to provide real-time and historical data on Greece’s Electricity Transmission System. The application enables monitoring of system load, energy production, interconnections, and balancing markets, offering data-driven insights for stakeholders.

Challenge

IPTO needed a centralized, data-driven platform to monitor and analyze Greece’s electricity transmission system in real-time, taking into account historical data. Previously, stakeholders relied on fragmented data sources making it difficult to track system load, energy production, interconnections, and balancing markets efficiently. The goal was to develop a web-based application that would provide instant access to critical insights, support data-driven decision-making, and enhance transparency across the energy sector.

Developing IPTOMETRICS came with several technical challenges. The system had to meet high-performance standards, complying with Google’s Page Speed Insights and achieving a performance score above 90 for both desktop and mobile. The UX had to be implemented with absolute accuracy, precisely matching IPTO’s design specifications in Adobe XD. Additionally, seamless integration into IPTO’s CI/CD environment was essential, requiring compliance with Jenkins Pipelines, automated testing using Cypress, and structured documentation. Lastly, the platform had to be highly scalable, efficiently managing 3,000 unique visitors, 4,500 visits, and 40,000 page requests per month while maintaining optimal performance.

Approach

To address these challenges, a structured Agile development approach was implemented, ensuring flexibility and efficiency in execution.:

  • Frontend Development: The application is built using React 18.x and the NX build framework. The UI design is strictly followed, based on detailed UX designs provided by the client (in Adobe XD).
  • Testing: Cypress is used for testing, and proper documentation is maintained using Confluence and Readme files.
  • DevOps & CI/CD: Jenkins Pipelines are used to implement continuous integration and delivery flows, ensuring the application is deployed to both Development and Production environments.
  • Performance Optimization: The application meets Google’s Page Speed Insights Rules and targets a performance score of >90 for both desktop and mobile devices. The response time for any user action or event is less than 1 second, excluding REST API response time.

Results & Impact

The successful delivery of the IPTOMETRICS web application provided IPTO with a robust digital tool for monitoring and analyzing Greece’s electricity transmission system. The platform enables real-time and historical tracking of system load, energy production, interconnections, and balancing markets, eliminating reliance on outdated or fragmented data sources. With IPTOMETRICS, IPTO has strengthened operational efficiency, improved decision-making, and enhanced transparency across the energy market, supporting its broader digital transformation strategy.
