A Vision for Renewable Energy Integration
The Amfilochia Hydro-Pumped Storage Project, promoted by TERNA ENERGY S.A., represents a critical step in Europe’s renewable energy transition. Recognized by the European Commission as a Project of Common Interest (PCI 3.24), this initiative is poised to revolutionize energy storage and grid stability. By enabling the efficient use of excess energy from renewable sources, it aligns perfectly with Europe’s vision for a sustainable and resilient energy future.
Set in the Municipality of Amfilochia, the project centers on a sophisticated pumped storage system, comprising:
- Two upper reservoirs (Agios Georgios and Pyrgos),
- A shared lower reservoir, the existing artificial lake of Kastraki.
This system allows energy to be hydraulically stored during periods of low demand or renewable overproduction, with water pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper ones. The stored energy can then be recovered via turbine mode during peak demand, delivering clean, reliable power to Greece’s energy grid.
The project’s dual focus on storage and renewable integration addresses a critical need in today’s energy landscape: balancing the variability of renewable sources like wind and solar to ensure grid reliability and reduce waste.
Ensuring Technical Maturity
To advance this groundbreaking initiative, TERNA ENERGY collaborated with PLANET and its associated team of experts to achieve technical and investment readiness. The project’s preparatory phase, supported by Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding, included development of Main Designs, incorporating diverse supporting technical studies, Comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to ensure compliance with regulatory and sustainability standards and preparation of Tender Documents to facilitate the seamless transition to construction.
The consultancy team played a pivotal role in driving this project forward, delivering a wide range of specialized services:
- Integrated Planning & Coordination: Ensuring all studies, designs, and documentation were completed on schedule and to the highest quality standards.
- Project Management: Facilitating seamless collaboration between TERNA ENERGY, external experts, and stakeholders to integrate all components of the project.
- Public Consultations: Guiding communication efforts to incorporate feedback from communities and stakeholders into the project’s plans.
- Technical Studies Participation: Providing expertise in the preparation of Main Designs, supporting technical studies, and tender documentation.
Ensuring a Smooth Transition to Construction
Through meticulous planning, collaboration, and quality control, the consultancy team ensured that the project’s designs and studies were accurate, comprehensive, and aligned with regulatory and technical requirements. This thorough preparation paved the way for a seamless transition from design to implementation, minimizing risks and maximizing efficiency. By harnessing advanced engineering and strategic planning, this project demonstrates how infrastructure projects can support both local and regional energy goals, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
