The Challenge
As a result of the deregulation of the Greek telecoms market, the Hellenic Telecoms Organization (OTE) had to develop and update its strategy in the course of its transition from a state monopoly to a company operating under a market competitive environment.
The Approach
Addressing initially the challenge of operating in a deregulated market from a strategic, organizational, operational and financial perspective, it was eventually essential to address also two main challenges:
- the introduction of mobile telephony in the Greek market, shifting customer interest from fixed landlines to mobile communications and the role that OTE should / would play facing new competition in this context
- the need for international expansion in order to grow over and above the constrained Greek market where OTE was still from a market share a practical monopoly and as such native growth was severely restricted.
For both of these challenges, strategic business plan updates were necessary to happen so that the organization had a clear path towards addressing them both.
Hellenic Telecoms Organization established its presence in the Greek deregulated telecoms market, as well as expand into mobile telephony and the region around Greece, by updating its strategy.
Results and Impact
In addition to establishing OTE as a market competitive entity in its legacy service domain, the organization entered successfully the mobile telephony sector by pursuing and obtaining a 3d license in Greece, while it expanded in the geographic vicinity of Greece in countries such as Romania, Bulgaria and Armenia.
