A two-phased journey to innovation
The project unfolded in two phases, combining the creation of infrastructure with the development of impactful programmes.
In the first phase, Blue Lab was established as a fully operational innovation hub. This involved renovating and equipping the centre with advanced 3D printers, automation systems, and microelectronics to facilitate prototype development. A cohesive brand identity, including a website, brochures, and social media outreach, was created to introduce Blue Lab as an important innovation centre. Operational procedures were formalized, and both scientific and support staff were mobilized and trained to ensure seamless service delivery.
The second phase focused on running the centre’s programmes and services. A blue acceleration programme guided young entrepreneurs in crafting innovative business strategies and products while enabling them to create prototypes with advanced tools. Hands-on skill-building initiatives, such as 3D design and printing seminars, automation tutorials, and microelectronics workshops, were complemented by outreach activities including school visits, awareness workshops, and networking events
Transformative Impact
Within the first years of its operation, Blue Lab became a point of reference concerning Blue Economy innovation in Attica. Entrepreneurs were empowered to transform their ideas into actionable solutions, creating innovative business models and prototypes. The centre engaged schools, students, and local communities through educational programmes that cultivated a culture of innovation and raised awareness about the Blue Economy.
Blue Lab established Piraeus as a hub for technological and entrepreneurial development on Blue Economy, setting a benchmark for municipal innovation centres in Greece.
